With junior standout Nicholas Reach leading the way, the Scranton Prep golf team enjoyed a day like never before in its rich history.

Reach carded a 1-under-par 71 to capture the East Regional individual championship at Golden Oaks Country Club in Fleetwood on Tuesday. He is the first golfer from District 2 to win the 18-hole event that serves as the qualifier for the PIAA Championships.

Scranton Prep's boys wound up winning the team championship by 13 strokes over Parkland.

And, the Prep girls finished second in the team standings for the second straight year.

Besides Scranton Prep's golfers, others from District 2 who qualified for this week's PIAA Championships include Pat Ross of Dunmore, Delaware Valley's Cody Cox, Erik Meyer from Abington Heights, North Pocono's Ellen Ceresko, Mike Napkori of Holy Redeemer and Vicky Petrosky from Wyoming Area.

Run to glory

Both Elk Lake cross country teams captured Lackawanna League titles Tuesday.

Led by Tyler Williams' win in the race at Blue Ridge, the defending PIAA Class AA champion Warriors notched three victories to cap a 22-0 campaign.

Meanwhile, Maria Trowbridge's victory helped the girls team win three times and finish the regular season with a 22-0 mark.

North Pocono finished with a 20-2 record to wind up as the league's Class AAA boys champion.

Honesdale took the league's Class AAA girls crown with a 21-1 record. It was the 15th league title in the Hornets' history.

Operations ceased

There will be no indoor football played at Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza in 2010.

On Monday, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers announced they are ceasing operations for next season.

Owner Cosmo DeNicola, who put the team up for sale in August three days after the Pioneers lost in the af2 championship game, was in negotiations with a prospective buyer, but the deadline to finalize a deal expired.

DeNicola did not rule out future negociations with other buyers to bring the team back in 2011.

Twice as nice

Jayson Werth homered twice, Shane Victorino and Pedro Feliz also went deep, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 10-4, in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series on Wednesday. The win enabled the Phillies to take the best-of-7 series, 4-1, and return to the World Series.

Ryan Howard was named Most Valuable Player of the NLCS after batting .333 with two home runs and eight RBIs in the series.

The Phillies will try to become the first National League team to win back-to-back World Series since the 1975-76 Cincinnati Reds.
