No matter how hard Penn Can Speedway tried, Mother Nature would not allow the Susquehanna track to run a full racing program.

After rain washed out Friday night's schedule, Penn Can officials attempted to make it up Sunday.

Two features were completed. Steve Deinhardt of Deposit, N.Y., won the Pure Stock feature and Tunkhannock's Kenny Underwood captured the Four-Cylinder Stock feature.

Then the rains came and wipe out the rest of the program, forcing three features to be rescheduled.

Sportsman will run a double feature tonight as part of Penn Can's annual Fireworks Extravaganza card. Modifieds, Late Models, Super Stocks, Pure Stocks and Four-Cylinder Stocks will also be in action beginning at 7:15 p.m. The evening will be capped off with a huge fireworks display.

The Modifieds will make up their feature from Sunday on July 10, while the Late Model feature was rescheduled for July 24.

Win for Puckett

Brian Puckett of Old Forge notched his second win of the season in the 20-lap Sportsman feature at Five Mile Point in Kirkwood, N.Y., on June 27.

Susquehanna's Brian Decker and Nicholson's Dwayne Robbins continued their back-and-forth battle at the top of the Sportsman standings by placing fifth and eighth, respectively. With those finishes, Decker reclaimed the points lead, 430-429, over Robbins.

Bobby Trapper from Scranton was the highest-finishing local driver in the 45th annual Heath Memorial for Modifieds, placing sixth. Gary Griffin of Archbald, a former Heath Memorial winner (2005), finished 10th and Old Forge's Bobby Puckett was 15th.

Other local drivers in the race included Frank Yankowski of Throop, 18th; Joe Krisovich from Mayfield, 20th; Eric Stephens Jr. of Jermyn, 21st; Nicholson's Matt Latwinski, 22nd; Kevin Bates from Lake Ariel, 23rd; Tom Oleski of Scranton, 26th; and Susquehanna's George Kostelansky, 27th.

Kenny Underwood from Tunkhannock was also a winner, taking the checkered flag in the Lightning Cat Expert feature.

Racing resumes Saturday at Five Mile Point at 6 p.m. with 2-for-1 admission and a huge postrace fireworks show. Headlining the program is a 40-lap Sportsman feature. Pure Stocks, IMCA Modifieds, Lightning Cats, Kiddie Cats, A League of Their Own, Figure 8s and 600cc Modifieds are also scheduled.

Fast tracks

In addition to Saturday night's program, Five Mile Point will also be in action Wednesday when it hosts a Race of Champions Dart DIRT Tour doubleheader. There will be a 75-lap Modified feature and a 40-lap Sportsman feature. Hot laps begin at 6:30 p.m. and heat races begin at 7:30 p.m. ... Scranton Prep graduate and Fordham University student Chase Mattioli made his NASCAR Nationwide Series debut June 27 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The 19-year-old driver, who is the grandson of Pocono Raceway CEO Dr. Joseph Mattioli, started 42nd and finished 32nd in a race that featured 11 Sprint Cup Series regulars. ... Grimm Construction Racing, the Waymart-based team on the NASCAR Camping World East Series with driver Eddie MacDonald, placed sixth in the Heluva Good! Summer 125 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on June 26. The finish enabled MacDonald to move into second place in the series standings after six of 11 races with 883 points. That's 18 points behind leader Joey Lavender.
