Calvey travels long road for first MMA fight

Most of all, he remembers the disaster. It's not surprising, because everyone who spent any time along the Gulf Coast during the fall of 2005 takes away the same memories Tyler Calvey did. Hurricane Katrina had just ravaged that area a month earlier. Homes were destroyed. Cities were crippled. Lives were lost.

Area boasts a number of great football coaches

In this weekend's District 2 football championship games, the coaches involved will feature legendary and cagey veterans, and some up-and-comers ready to take their place among the next generation of leaders.

Dunmore's Jack Henzes, who still coaches with a fiery intensity and sharp focus after 43 seasons, already has his likeness carved into the Mount Rushmore of area coaches.

He, along with his father, John "Papa Bear" Henzes, Mid Valley's Frank Pazzaglia, West Scranton's Sam Donato and Joe DeAntona, Old Forge's Elio Ghigiarelli, Lakeland's Jerry Wasilchak and Allen "Butch" Keller, are the cornerstones of this area, and have shaped high school football players into young men for decades.

District 2 and Eastern Conference football finals tonight

Eight District 2 football teams will be in action this weekend to decide championships.

In addition to tonight's District 2 Class AA championship game between Dunmore and Lakeland, the Class A title will be decided at Wyoming Valley West's Spartan Stadium.

Riverside, the No. 4 seed and defending champion, takes on No. 2 seed Northwest at 7 p.m.

Last season, Riverside captured the championship by defeating Old Forge. The Vikings advanced past Southern Columbia in the District 2-4 subregional and eventually lost to Schuylkill Haven in the PIAA quarterfinals.

Hartford's quick start finishes WSB Penguins early

HARTFORD, Conn. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins played Thursday night at Hartford without six key players.

Then they spotted the Wolf Pack a three-goal lead in the first period.

Despite that, the game still was a tossup midway through the third period.

Wade Brookbank's goal at 9:48 sliced the Penguins' deficit to 4-3. But Hartford's Corey Locke scored a power-play goal at 11:35 to clinch a 5-3 victory.
