Umpires blue

This year's baseball playoffs have been entertaining in their own right and particularly delicious for local fans hoping for a World Series between the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies. (Rosters for both teams include many players who played Triple-A baseball in Lackawanna County.)

The playoffs also have featured some unusually bad umpiring that has prompted the commissioner's office to realign the umpiring crew for the World Series in response to the playoff issues.

It's time for baseball to consider expanding the replay system, which it uses to rule on disputed home runs, to ensure accuracy on foul balls, close plays at the plate and a few other critical plays.

Officials worry that replay would slow games that often move too slowly, but there are few fans who would sacrifice accuracy for speed.

Players are accountable for their performances. Their names are attached to hits, runs and errors. There's no reason that umpires cannot be held accountable in the cause of correct calls.
