TUNKHANNOCK - Borough council named retired state police Lt. Paul Mendofik as its new police chief Thursday.

Chief Mendofik had been working as a consultant to the borough since 2007 to help in the search for a new chief.

The Police Department has been without a chief since Joseph Coleman resigned in November 2007 after just five months on the job. Prior to that, the borough hadn't had a chief since 2005.

"We're privileged to have him here in the borough," council President Stacy Huber said of Chief Mendofik, who will start his new assignment July 13.

Chief Mendofik said he wants to examine the priorities of the borough and the Police Department to make sure it operates efficiently and has the best interests of the people in mind.

"I'm here to carry on the tradition of excellence that the Tunkhannock police have always had," he said.

Chief Mendofik, originally from Brooklyn, N.Y., came to Pennsylvania in the 1960s. A Marine Corps veteran, Chief Mendofik also served on the State Capitol Police in Harrisburg.

He joined the state police in 1981, and is no stranger to Wyoming County, having served as commander of the Tunkhannock state police barracks in 1993.

Since retiring in 2004, Chief Mendofik has worked as a law enforcement consultant for several private businesses and public agencies.

Sounds to me like the guy can't keep a job. Wonder what that's all about, I'm sure we in the Boro will find out soon enough. He probably thinks he is running the NYPD instead of a small time PD. My guess is he will last less than a year. I also want to ask the question, Where does he live? I'm pretty sure he lives in the Mt. Top area.

He was a part time consultant for the Borough.

Probably didn't try very hard since he was getting paid $25/hr since 2007. Wondering if they are still going to pay him the advertised salary of $41,000/year, which is a pay cut from his consultant work. Will he also be quitting his two other current jobs and his own consultant work?

The Borough always wanted him to be chief but he didn't want it. The Borough had a couple of other canidates that just didn't pan out, I guess they finally convinced Mendofik to take the job.

So they have been paying this guy since 2007 to consult them on who to hire for a police chief and end up hiring him for the job. Does this sound wrong on a few levels?

I did some research on this guy He's had alot of jobs since retiring. That should tell the powers that be something. I would like to know how he was hired to find a Chief, couldn't find one, then threw his hat into the ring. Something doesn't smell right here. We couldn't promote within the ranks?

Wasnt this guy just hired by Bloomsburg University as security director? I think Tunkhannock better investigate what happened there before they hire him.

Does this guy live in the Boro?
Why did he have so many jobs after he retired?
How could you be the consultant and then get the job?
Is he going to get a car to take home?
Questions 07/04/09 09:46
Now let me get this straight. He was hired to help select a new chief, however now he is appointed to be the new chief. How hard was he trying to select a new chief?
