City police are investigating the armed robbery of a clergyman over the weekend in West Scranton.

The victim, a 66-year-old Russian Orthodox priest whose name was not released, told police he had pulled his vehicle into his garage in the 100 block of South Sherman Avenue on Saturday about 12:18 a.m. when he was approached by a masked man.

The man ordered the victim to get out of his car and then pointed a gun at his face as he demanded money, police said. The victim handed over his wallet, which contained an undisclosed amount of cash.

The priest told police his assailant tried to pistol-whip him, but he stepped back and the weapon grazed the side of his face. The gunman then fled south on Sherman on foot.

Later Saturday, the victim found his wallet - minus the money - in his mailbox, police said.

The gunman was described as a Hispanic man in his 20s, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and 150 pounds. He was wearing black clothing, with a dark bandanna on his head and another covering his face, police said.

Police asked anyone with information about the robbery to call headquarters at 348-4134.

The train link will make it easier for decent people to get OUT! Build it now! Scranton trash won't be able to figure out the timetable.

Doherty only knows one place in west side, that would be Charles Sumner school. That's where he stayed all day on election day. Now that he won another term, you see what concern he has for west side. There have been repeated shooting incidents and other serious crimes and no action. Maybe that's because the dumb and dumber, Elliott and Hayes, haven't initiated Comstat yet and they can't formulate a plan of action without the statistics. In any event, hope you idiots from west side that voted for this clown are happy. West Side has the most registered voters than any other section of the city. You had a candidate who's family was born and raised in west side, and he as well. He also started his own successful business in west side and continues to live and work there. Yet, although he won the districts in the primary, it was by small margins, meaning a lot of you voted for someone from green ridge who only knows you is when he wants your vote. Your getting just what you voted for.

good thing we have a Public Safety Director, Chief of Police and a Mayor looking out for us, God Bless Father!

Another crime in West side involving a gun. We need to rid our city of the Pied Piper of Greenridge and his boys. They are like the 3 stooges Mo, KIng Chris, Larry, Hayes, and Curly, Elliot. The lack of leadership and concern in this city is sickening. WHO IS UP FOR A GOOD WRITE IN CAMPAIGN IN NOV. Lets change now while we still can.

LR..........Boy.....You just don't give up! Everything that the Times reports is somehow connected to the rail link to New Jersey.

That really must be a huge axe that you are grinding.

Hey McFly, you're right, and we have Biff Doherty running the place into the ground.

When did Scranton turn into the alternative 1985 that Marty returned to in Back to the Future II? All of a sudden there are casinos everywhere and people shooting and robbing each other.
M McFly 06/30/09 10:59
I agree with Bob, pack heat, and shoot the robber in the back when fleeing if need be, a jury will not convict a person for doing that... People need to start standing up for themselves.
Daryl Starks 06/30/09 10:09
Father Mike? Forward to Jennifer

West Side is the New Wilkes Barre- shootings or robberies every day. I think the Mayor should ride with a policeman in that area and get a good look. Mr Mayor when was the last time you were in West Side? It ain't no Green Ridge!!!!!
Brian 06/30/09 09:49
Scranton is out of control and there are a few common threads obvious to anyone who will look. It is truly sad.
A. Looker 06/30/09 09:04
Chief Elliott said the mask man was only the Lone Ranger playing a prank on the priest. He stated there is no crime in Scranton.
Craig 06/30/09 08:28
BE VIGILANT AND BLOW THEM AWAY!
BOB 06/30/09 07:47
Just another West Side story !
Phil McCrakin 06/30/09 07:35
