Price Chopper Supermarkets and Giant Food Stores are voluntarily recalling select packages of USDA ground beef based upon information from USDA and Ashville, N.Y.-based Fairbank Farms - a meat supplier to several chains in the Northeast that is believed to have distributed beef containing possible E. coli contamination.

The Price Chopper ground beef in question has expiration dates of Sept. 16 through Oct. 5, 2009, and are: ground round, ground sirloin, 80 percent lean ground beef, 80 percent lean chili meat, 93 percent lean grind, 96 percent lean grind and meat loaf mix.

The potentially contaminated meat from Giant was sold as store-brand one-pound trays of ground beef, such as: Giant Extra Lean Ground Beef, 96/4; Giant Meatloaf & Meatball Mix; Giant Nature's Promise Ground Beef; and Giant Nature's Promise Ground Beef Patties. Each package says "EST. 492" inside the USDA inspection mark or on the nutrition label and was packaged on Sept. 15 or 16. The packages carry a sell-by date from Sept. 19 through Sept. 28.

For more information on the recall, call AFA, the supplier that initiated the recall, at 877-546-0122.
