Four elected to Scranton School Board

The Scranton School Board race was over before it began.

With four candidates for the four open seats, there will be one new face on the board after Tuesday's election.

Newcomer Bob Sheridan joined three incumbents in winning four-year terms.

Brian Jeffers, Frank Brazill and Bob Lesh won re-election.

Mr. Sheridan replaces Todd Hartman, a three-term director who lost in May's primary election.

Republican candidate Steve Scarpetta dropped out of the race in September because he said he had not lived in the city for the state-required year before the election. Mr. Scarpetta said he was unaware of the rule during the primary election.

The incumbents ran on their records, which they said included starting and partly completing the district's $60 million construction project, passing a fair, last-minute teachers contract to avoid a strike and hiring a certified superintendent, William King.

Other issues the candidates said they wanted to tackle over the next four years were how to pay for state pension payments set to double next year and how to fund renovations at the Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County.

The board voted against the current renovation plan Monday night, but directors said they are willing to consider alternative plans.

The directors also said they wanted to see district SAT scores improve, and Pennsylvania System of School Assessment scores increase as 2014 approaches. Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, all students must be proficient in math and reading by 2014.

Mr. Sheridan said that as a newcomer, he wants to reduce school taxes for residents 65 and older. Another priority for Mr. Sheridan is completing structural improvements to West Scranton High School.

With 48 of 48 districts reporting:

SCRANTON SCHOOL BOARD (4 seats)

✓ Brian Jeffers (D) 8,940

✓ Bob Sheridan (D/R) 8,679

✓ Bob Lesh (D/R) 8,539

✓ Frank Brazill (D/R) 8,472

Very disappointed when Scarpetta had to drop out.He was the only candidate with an impressive education, and a mother who has been a teacher for decades.allowing high school dropouts to run is too rediculouse to imagine, what a town.I'd settle for accomplished ethical business people, new guy is a sheeny in the first degree. You get what you deserve scranton, good luck with your choice.

A more qualified candidate did run. I voted for him. He is an educator and much more qualified than Sheridan. That idiot could not even hold an intelligent conversation with someone. Unless it has to do with used vehicles and rolling back odometers.

I would like everyone to think about what they are saying before they start to comment about people and their educational background. I have seen Mr. Lesh and others who do not have college level education majors provide more for these children in the last nine years than I have seen actual educators do for kids in a classroom. Also the school board is actually involved with the monetary value of the schools and what is in the best interest with the money available to be distributed through the whole school district and that the kids each get things equally, it is really pathetic that this even has to an issue and the one pre-req to be on the school board is a high school degree or equivalent, so how they got there should not be of anyone's concern other than the job they do now. It's very childish to here adults be like this and that is the only thing bad you have to say then I don't think there is a problem at all. Find something significant to complain about like how are we going to fix the schools we have now vs educational background. So, if anyone thinks that they can do better and more qualified then run next term or otherwise keep comments to yourself.

Bob Sheridan is not even permitted to coach Little League baseball, why did over 8,000 people vote for him? This current system is archaic, albeit quite characteristic of Lackawanna County and its backward ways.

Educational level aside, the real need is for Directors who can manage a budget and scale of this important community asset. We would be much better off with young, smart businessmen and women who are service minded, yet capable of scrutinizing financial statements and making good decisions. We need to squeeze the best education for our children from the available dollars. Directors who are doling out unmerited jobs and favors should be expelled.

Well judgment... Most people on this board, I would assume, are talking about Sheridan. Mr. Lesh is a good man. The other guy is a scheming, conniving, sneaky person only out for the betterment of himself. He does not have the best interests of our children in mind.

well llikelearneybookeys from your post thats what I took that as because it seems that some people like to attack Mr. Lesh's Educational background..and you didn't mention that you were talking about Sheridan...What Mr. Sheridans intentions are will wait to see I don't judge a book by its cover and I'm not going to judge just because hes a drop out..

Who are you to judge anybody about there education background..Actually the candidate your speaking of does have a education and also is a graduate of Johnson College for Welding oh also he is a marine which by the way is the reason why he dropped out of school as was many of the men back then did..Mr. Lesh is a well educated man more then you know..so before you speak think about what you say..Bob Lesh is a good man and I'm proud to have him on the Scranton School Board..hes done alot for our School District for the 9yrs hes been on the board and he will do the same for the next four years to come..

Once again, a high school dropout elected to the school board. No wonder the district is in the shape its in. The current school board format should be scrapped. It should not be a political office. Right now, its nothing more than a stepping stone for people who want to get into local politics. These clowns don't care about our kids or our schools. Its time to require that school board members be parents of kids currently attending Scranton schools, and they should be elected by a vote of parents in the district.

Good luck to the School Board. They'll need it in this economic enviroment. Its a shame the quality of candidate can't be expanded to include professionals and people with more business acumen. We need young, educated professionals to step up and run. There's too much at stake for Scranton's future. This is the front line in the battle against brain drain.

Let's see....
Not one educator was elected for school board...
Only one candidate ran that was an educator...
AND
One candidate didn't even graduate from high school... PRICELESS!!!

Good luck Scranton education. I guess having a clue about TEACHING isn't a good quality though. Hopefully the only educator that ran will be back in 4 years. I hope Scranton education can wait that long.
