COVINGTON TWP. - Township residents need to be ready to make some changes when they are assigned new 911 addresses.

At a public hearing Monday night, Covington supervisors voted 3-0 to pass an ordinance enhancing public safety by naming new streets or renaming streets with duplicate names. Supervisors Marlene Beavers and Bill Willson were absent.

Solicitor Brian Yeager said residents may receive their new addresses in May or June.

The township recently hired PoconoGIS to compile the new addresses. Supervisor Chairman Thomas Yerke said the cost to the township will be about $20,000. The biggest difficulty with the addresses, he said, is that the township encompasses both Moscow and Gouldsboro ZIP codes.

Under the new ordinance, no streets can have "similar sounding names" or names more than 16 letters.

Residents will be required to post their new addresses on their residences in clear, easily identifiable numbers that are visible from the street.

Residents will receive new addresses via a letter from the township. Failure to comply with the ordinance can result in a fine of up to $600.

Covington resident Barbara Havenstrite spoke at Monday's supervisors meeting about fines she wishes Covington police would enforce on all-terrain-vehicle riders.

Ms. Havenstrite, who lives on Center Street, said she was plagued by ATV riders all summer who would block the road and repeatedly drive past her residence.

"This summer it was horrendous," she said, asking for a stronger police enforcement in the area.

n Supervisors are holding a conditional-use hearing for the placement of a windmill on land owned by Lackawanna College. The hearing is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1.
