A West Scranton man and his girlfriend were arrested Tuesday on assault and weapons charges after holding two people at gunpoint in what started as a mother-son dispute over allegedly stolen money, city police said.

No one was injured in the incident late Monday at an apartment at 1617 Swetland St.

Thomas Donald Hazelton, 28, and his girlfriend, Debra K. Nally, 27, both of 440 Aswell Court, are accused of threatening apartment resident Eddie Mock and Mr. Hazelton's mother, Donna Hazelton, with loaded handguns after barging into the home shortly before 11 p.m., police said.

According to arrest papers prepared by Officer James Weaver, Mr. Hazelton initially drew a handgun from his waistband, cocked it and put it to his mother's head while threatening to shoot her.

At his direction, Ms. Nally then drew a second handgun and stood watch over Ms. Hazelton and Mr. Mock, police said.

"Keep an eye on them. If any one of them move, shoot their ass," Mr. Mock quoted Mr. Hazelton as telling his girlfriend, according to the arrest affidavit.

When Officer Weaver arrived in response to a neighbor's complaint, he heard loud arguing from inside the apartment, including mention of a gun. He called for additional officers, who set up a perimeter around the home.

Police ordered all four people out of the residence, and they were handcuffed as they exited. Inside the apartment, officers found two 9mm handguns, each loaded with hollow point bullets, along with drug paraphernalia, police said. A set of brass knuckles was found in Ms. Nally's purse in her vehicle.

The suspects both told officers they had valid permits to carry the handguns; they denied threatening Mr. Mock or Ms. Hazelton with them, police said.

Ms. Nally told police she and Mr. Hazelton went to the apartment because his mother had stolen money from him. Mr. Mock said Mr. Hazelton accused his mother of stealing $500 to $600 and seven pounds of marijuana, according to the affidavit.

Magisterial District Judge James Kennedy arraigned Mr. Hazelton and Ms. Nally on a long list of charges, including aggravated and simple assault, terroristic threats, reckless endangerment and possessing instruments of crime.

Both were ordered held in the Lackawanna County Prison - Mr. Hazelton on $50,000 bail and Ms. Nally on $100,000 bail.

Everyone thats written some sort of rude comment about them; seriously have no idea what the real story is; does everyone not realize there are two sides to every story? these people arent criminals; a small ordeal grew over time with exagerations and lies. they truely are two sincere people. ya'll need to grow up and not judge a book by its cover. big deal they have tattoos and piercings; that doesnt make you less than someone else. seriously grow up people.

Carny boy waived his right to a preliminary hearing before Terry G. The charges were sent to Court for trial.

Lock him up for a long time. Loser.

It's hard to believe this lowest of the low, disgusting pair have people defending them, makes me want to run out of Scranton for sure!!!. Please don't tell me this couple has a baby? I hope and pray they never get their child back, they do not deserve to be parents, they don't even deserve to be anywhere else but prison. Ugh!!!!!!
Linda 07/12/09 02:10
I can't believe the comments supporting this pair as fine upstanding citizens. "Talented?" "Good people?" "A learning experience??" As long as Scranton, and the people of Scranton, continue to accept this kind of anti-social, nonproductive (I'm not talking about teen mothers), often violent behavior as "normal" then this city is going nowhere.
The culture of NEPA is just plain trashy. It doesn't have to be that way except for basic ignorance and laziness.

Wonderful people they are, lowest of the low, how do you put a gun to your mother's head? They should stay locked up for ever, they don't deserve to be free, how low and disgusting, white trash for sure.

Scranton is a safer city this morning with these two scum off the street. By the way, why carry hollow point bullets??? Please answer that. Brass knuckles??? What is that. cosmetic jewelery. Get 'em behind bars and dry 'em out before they actually do hurt someone. I agree with previous posters, defending people like this says more about the defenders than anything.

Restoring the Pride !!! Look what kind of scum we have living in this "fine" city.

It really is a shame, Tom is a talented tattoo artist, and he had to go and do such stupid stuiff like this, over $500!? It's pathetic what drugs can do to you.
Jeremy 07/07/09 11:10
Anyone who can defend this trash is just as trashy. Guns, drugs, brass knuckles in a purse? Keep posting about what good people they are. You are making fools of yourselves.

I agree with "look at them". They do look like drug addicts and some fine upstanding citizens.I'm sure the mother is just as desirable, judging from the paper. Thank God the child has been taken off them. White trash.
