Renovations underway in downtown Scranton space

An eatery will be a key tenant in a downtown Scranton space formerly occupied by the landmark store Helen Schwartz Gifts, said the owner of the Mercantile Building.

Renovations have been under way at the 3,500-square-foot space at the southeast corner of Penn Avenue and Spruce Street for several weeks. Building owner Sunita Arora, a local real estate broker, said the tenant has declined to identify himself until the opening nears. She said the eatery is expected to open by the end of the year and will offer a takeout counter with some tables.

Meanwhile, Ms. Arora is working on neighboring space expected to house one of her ERA One Source real estate offices.

Helen Schwartz Gifts, an upscale retail store, vacated the Mercantile Building in December after 60 years. The Country Club Men's Shop, a longstanding, high-end men's apparel store, closed in May, leaving the entire ground floor of the building unoccupied.

Ms. Arora bought the three-story office and commercial building for more than $1 million in September 2007.

I guess Business was pretty good to Sunita when the Lenders were giving Mortgages to people who couldn't afford them. But hey she got her cut, between broker fees and such.
