Recovery funds aid bridge projects
HARRISBURG - Bridge work in Susquehanna and Pike counties has been added to the list of projects the state will undertake with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act money, the Rendell administration said Friday.
In Susquehanna County, the Department of Transportation will replace the bridge carrying Graham Road over Wyalusing Creek in Rush Twp. at a cost of $467,971. PennDOT will spend another $858,720 to replace the Twin Lakes Road bridge over Shohola Creek in Pike County's Shohola Twp.

At Muhlenberg, the University of Scranton women's basketball team advanced to the championship game of the Scotty Wood Tournament for the second time in three years by knocking off Alvernia College, 57-47.
Riverside graduate Jennifer King scored 15 of her game-high 19 points in the first half as the Lady Royals jumped out to a 34-22 lead at half. Megan Kopecki had 14 points and five rebounds and Tayler Pallotta from Dunmore added 10 points and six rebounds.

DIMOCK TWP. - In a field between Ronald Carter's trailer and the gas drilling site less than 500 feet from his front porch, a group of neighbors shared nightmarish stories Friday morning about the natural gas extraction they say has changed their lives and homes.
The 15 families were there to announce a lawsuit they filed Thursday against Cabot Oil and Gas Corp., the Texas-based natural gas operator that has drilled 63 wells in a 9-square-mile area around their homes in Susquehanna County, and has permits to drill about 60 more.

Couple accused in pair of arsons
GIBSON TWP. - A Wilkes- Barre couple has been charged with arson in separate fires at a home and bathhouse at Shady Rest Campground in Susquehanna County, state police at Gibson said Thursday.
Tamara C. Santarelli, 40, is accused of setting the bathhouse fire Dec. 1, 2007, as well as the fire April 16 at the residence where she and her husband lived, police said. Victor J. Santarelli III, 43, is charged only with the 2007 fire.

Fifteen families in Susquehanna County filed a federal lawsuit against Cabot Oil and Gas Corp. on Thursday, saying the Texas-based natural gas operator damaged their property and health while drilling for gas in the Marcellus Shale.
The families, who live in an area around Carter Road in Dimock Twp. and have gas leases with Cabot, say contamination and pollution caused by Cabot's activities has made some of them physically sick, fouled their drinking water and diminished their property values.

King's coach Rich Mannello celebrated a win over rival Wilkes on Saturday with his largest class of seniors in 19 years of coaching.
That class of 21 seniors will also be his last as Mannello announced his resignation on Monday as King's head coach.
Mannello told the Monarchs he was stepping down in a team meeting Monday.
In 17 varsity seasons at King's, Mannello posted a record of 70-104-1. Since 2000, the Monarchs were an even 53-53 that included two NCAA playoff selections, a total of five postseason appearances and a Middle Atlantic Conference title.
