A West Scranton man and his girlfriend were arrested Tuesday on assault and weapons charges after holding two people at gunpoint in what started as a mother-son dispute over allegedly stolen money, city police said.

No one was injured in the incident late Monday at an apartment at 1617 Swetland St.

Thomas Donald Hazelton, 28, and his girlfriend, Debra K. Nally, 27, both of 440 Aswell Court, are accused of threatening apartment resident Eddie Mock and Mr. Hazelton's mother, Donna Hazelton, with loaded handguns after barging into the home shortly before 11 p.m., police said.

According to arrest papers prepared by Officer James Weaver, Mr. Hazelton initially drew a handgun from his waistband, cocked it and put it to his mother's head while threatening to shoot her.

At his direction, Ms. Nally then drew a second handgun and stood watch over Ms. Hazelton and Mr. Mock, police said.

"Keep an eye on them. If any one of them move, shoot their ass," Mr. Mock quoted Mr. Hazelton as telling his girlfriend, according to the arrest affidavit.

When Officer Weaver arrived in response to a neighbor's complaint, he heard loud arguing from inside the apartment, including mention of a gun. He called for additional officers, who set up a perimeter around the home.

Police ordered all four people out of the residence, and they were handcuffed as they exited. Inside the apartment, officers found two 9mm handguns, each loaded with hollow point bullets, along with drug paraphernalia, police said. A set of brass knuckles was found in Ms. Nally's purse in her vehicle.

The suspects both told officers they had valid permits to carry the handguns; they denied threatening Mr. Mock or Ms. Hazelton with them, police said.

Ms. Nally told police she and Mr. Hazelton went to the apartment because his mother had stolen money from him. Mr. Mock said Mr. Hazelton accused his mother of stealing $500 to $600 and seven pounds of marijuana, according to the affidavit.

Magisterial District Judge James Kennedy arraigned Mr. Hazelton and Ms. Nally on a long list of charges, including aggravated and simple assault, terroristic threats, reckless endangerment and possessing instruments of crime.

Both were ordered held in the Lackawanna County Prison - Mr. Hazelton on $50,000 bail and Ms. Nally on $100,000 bail.

I happen to know this couple, only on a tattoo business level. You people are so typical as to judge others before knowing anything other than this situation. Calling them carnies, slack jaws, and worried about their baby??!!! How amazingly hypocritical you all are! First of all, for the person who asked if he worked a day in his life....This man is amazingly talented! He owns his own business and has tatted many many people in this area alone! Did God say...."Hmmmm, hes gonna look like a carnie, I better not give him a talent?" Oh, and wait....WHAT IF the true story has to do with the fact that this poor couple may have had their money stolen from them because his excuse of a mother stole it from their business so she can take care of her habit?? You DON"T know that! They both have overcome many challenges in their lives and have come out ahead, but because of what they look like....You are ALL making them both guilty before proven innocent?! Let me remind you of a wonderful little verse I read somewhere:

Mat 7:1 "Judge not, that you be not judged.
Mat 7:2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.
Mat 7:3 And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?
Mat 7:4 Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me remove the speck from your eye'; and look, a plank is in your own eye?
Mat 7:5 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

Wow, I couldn't have guessed by the look of these two slack jaws that they would have concealed weapons within arm's reach. Previous posts mention a child from these two model citizens, I wonder how that poor child will turn out.

As Austin Powers, international man of mystery once said is one of his greatest fears: "Carnies.....small hands...smell like cabbage..." Well Mr. Powers can rest easy, two carnies have been taken off the streets.

I really don't get how all of the scum behaving like scum in Scranton is the mayor's fault? Should everyone with a tatoo be automatically thrown in jail?
Bob McGob 07/01/09 11:59
Still more great news of how the crime rate in Scranton is down. Every week it is something else yet we keep electing The Pied Piper of Greenridge and his rats. When will we wake up. Dump the bums with a write in campaign in Nov. God I can't wait for the FBI to head north

I don't think it is West Side or South Side as much as it is society in general. You get the children you deserve. You raise your children by example. You take responsibility for them as children and teach them accountability. Or else you get children like these two (I am sure their mothers have no clue how they ended up this way) or Chase with mom blaming the police for her son's drinking. As the old saying goes.. GIGO.. garbage in garbage out.

all jokes aside this guys is a magnificent artist and this is just a shame! It's really sad what drugs can do to someone!
