Bishop Joseph Martino officially announced almost 100 appointments Thursday, many of which affect Lackawanna County parishes and programs. Many of the appointments are aligned with the reorganization and consolidation plan the Diocese of Scranton outlined at the start of February.

Mike,

I also find your comment "...might actually do some good instead of engaging the people who comment in here..."

Mike, I think your statement proves more then you intend. Why would you think you, nor the other posters here are worth my time? Why would you think you nor the other posters here are worth taking serioulsy and engaging in civil discourse and debate?

Father Dave Bechtel 07/03/09 07:28
Father Bechtel,
I don't live in Lackawanna County anymore but I still follow all its happenings on this web site. I don't always agree with Bishop Martino but have enjoyed all the postings of this site. It challenges me to really think about what I believe as a Catholic. Good Luck in your new assignment. I had a son who attended Penn College, but left after one semester. We found the town to be crime ridden and drug infested. The college had very little to offer its students socially. I pray that you can be a positive influence for the students there.

"Working" with youths and young adults is what causes some of these priests to be on this transfer list....
Stuart 07/03/09 07:07
Mike,

I am not certain I would call my transfer a "promotion." I would not call it a "demotion" either. It is simply a transfer. I grant it will be a bit of a role change. Assistant Pastors are sort of Spiritual GP's- they do a little bit of everything. In this case my ministry will be more specialized and specific as I will be working primarily with youth and young adults.

I am certainly looking forward to working with everyone, and I pray my ministry will be fruitful. My main objective or goal is that the people I work with, weather youth, college students or school staff/professors/teachers come to know Christ as present in Word and Sacrament. If there is one thing I really desire for them, it is that.

I am not the bishop's spokesmen. During my time posting here, I have gone out of my way to ensure that people know that I speak for myself, NOT the bishop and NOT the diocese. I do not work for the Diocese and therefore cannot speak for them in an official capacity.

I think my posting here is a very good thing becasue it gives public witness to the Faith within me. Saint Paul COMMANDS us to be ready to give a defense of the Faith within. I think my posting here is good becasue people have not, nor are they hearing the OTHERSIDE. I feel their viewpoints as a result need to be challanged. They need to be aware of the otherside.

Finally, I have made it clear that I have never minded that people disagree with me or even the Church. What I mind is some people's utter refusal to enter into a rational, intelligent, meaningful, and respectful dialog on the issues. We can disagree, yet be respectful. We can disagree, yet have meaningful and civil discourse.

Father Dave Bechtel 07/03/09 06:42
its good they promoted the bishops spokesman on here. from 1 job to 2 jobs might now actually do some good, instead of engaging those who comment in here , who dare speak againt the good bishop.
mike 07/03/09 04:46
We will definitely miss Msgr David Tressler here at ST. Patrick's church in West Scranton. He is a true angel and an apostle of God. May God Bless him in his new mission as Pastor of St. Rose's in Carbondale. Too bad we can't have Father James Dougher as our pastor. He was an EXCELLENT Asst Pastor. May God Bless him as well....
Tom H. 07/03/09 12:16
Father Dave Bechtel demoted?
Moving from an assistant pastor in one parish to the Chaplain of The Pennsylvania College of Technology as well as the Chaplain of Saint John Neumann Regional Academy is definitely NOT a demotion.
Father Dave now has the chance to interact with young people, our country's future, at not one but two academic institutions.
Lighten up onan, your vitriol and perversity are showing.
Gman 07/02/09 09:49
looks like davey boy got demoted
