Three former Boston Red Sox greats have been added to the lineup for next months Legends Reunion at PNC Field.
Rico Petrocelli, Dwight Evans and Bill Lee will be part of the Red Sox squad that faces a team of former New York Yankees greats in a five-inning baseball game Aug. 16 at 1:30 p.m. The event is co-sponsored by the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees and The Times-Tribune newspapers.
A standout infielder, Petrocelli played his entire 13-year career with the Red Sox (1963-76). In 1969, he set an American League record for home runs in a season by a shortstop with 40. The mark was broken in 1992 by Alex Rodriguez, who hit 42 while with the Seattle Mariners.
Petrocelli finished with 210 career home runs. He also drove in 773 runs and batted .251 in 1,553 games.
Evans spent 19 of his 20 major-league seasons in Boston. He batted .272 with 385 home runs and 1,384 RBIs.
A right fielder with an excellent throwing arm, Evans also was an eight-time Gold Glove winner. He retired in 1991, playing his final season with the Baltimore Orioles.
Nicknamed Spaceman, Lee was one of the games more colorful characters during his 14-year career. He is perhaps best known for separating his left (pitching) shoulder during a brawl in a game between the Red Sox and Yankees on May 20, 1976, at Yankee Stadium.
Lee pitched for the Red Sox from 1969-78, then for the Montreal Expos from 1979-82. He compiled a record of 119-90 with a 3.92 earned-run average. He also had 19 saves.
Joining Petrocelli, Evans and Lee on the Red Sox team will be Fred Lynn, Jim Rice, Mike Torrez and Luis Tiant.
Among the Yankees who have committed to the game are Rich Goose Gossage, Graig Nettles, Bucky Dent, Mickey Rivers, Roy White, Oscar Gamble and Jay Johnstone.
Two more players for each team have yet to be announced.
According to Jon Stephenson, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees vice president of marketing service, more than 5,500 tickets have been sold for the event.
Tickets are available at the PNC Field box office, by calling Ticketmaster at 693-4100 or logging on to www.LegendsReunion.com. Cost is $30 for the green lower-level seats; $25 for the orange lower-level seats; and $12 for upper-level seating.
